More Classic Cactus Terrariums

…for fun and profit! These you can actually find available for sale these days, even if they are 50s style classic plastic terrariums designed to kill all your plants within a year. They make a good way to get the plants started, but it’s not too long before they’ll need to be moved to real pots.

First up is this Dunecraft Cactus garden available on eBay.

It doesn’t look like real plants in the photo. I think they put graphics inside the plastic dome for the photo shoot.

This next one is also from Dunecraft, and is only $3! I think they must include seeds.

As we found out yesterday on this blog, everyone loves egg terrariums.

Nickelodeon sells cactus kits for kids (the ones above are clearly meant for adults, what with the 50s nostalgia styling).

Diego and Baby Jaguar at their desert garden. Awesome! Not really a terrarium, but who can resist.

Finally, this one is from Carolina Scientific and looks like it could really work. It’s meant for teachers to bring into the classroom.

Look at that vent in the top! Now that’s what I call a proper growing environment. We might have to carry those at the store. They also carry live geckos.

Happy Holidays!

More Cactus Terrarium News

I’ve been so busy featuring all the cactus and succulent and airplant terrariums we’ve been making, I forgot about all the good ones out there that others are making.

This one appears to be a bunch of cacti stuffed into a plastic egg. I don’t think it’s available anymore. It’s hard to figure out how big it is. I guess 8″ across by 15″ high.

This one sure seems bigger than the last one, and it also has photo images of extra cacti on the sides of the plastic container. Plus, it’s not an egg. But it also does not appear to be available anymore.

This one is from a florist in Joplin, MO, and it features some moss and rocks and a whole bunch of mirrors to make it look like a bigger section of the desert in your home.

Which one do you like best? I like the egg terrarium best of all.

Cactus Served in Illinois

I’ll bet there aren’t too many restaurants in Illinois that serve cactus. There’s one in Plainfield, which is only 40 miles from Chicago. Pretty far outside the city for such urban fare as cactus.

La Adelita Mexican Restaurant, Plainfield

The revolucionario de asada, priced at $15, is offered in the molcajetes section and contains grilled skirt steak, shrimp, grilled cactus, mushrooms and shrimp. A treat to be sure as the combination and flavors were amazing.

Count me skeptical.

Air Plant Terrarium

These are cute little stacked rock glass that is probably supposed to be used for a triple bud vase, but I used it for a Tillandsia terrarium. So there. Apparently I’ve come to love the tiny holes.

It’s hard to get anything but the thinnest of the Tillandsias in there. I used a couple tiny T. ionantha and some very thin T. recurvata. It was easy enough to get the sand in each of the rocks and then I tore tiny shreds of the some bright green preserved reindeer moss and stuffed them in as far as they would go. The tillandsias got added last.

It’s a good thing I have some sturdy and thin and long tweezers, or maybe I have tiny fingers.

Succulent Terrariums

I’ve been working hard at creating unique and unusual – that’s right I said they’re both unique AND unusual – succulent terrariums.

Here we have one that they said couldn’t be planted. It has 3 holes that are only about 1/4″ in diameter.

I got a whole bunch of tiny tiny succulent cuts into a very shallow base of soil covered with a smooth coating of sand with a few special pebbles in through those tiny holes.

Toy Cactus

It’s a patented toy cactus. Motor driven! Made in Japan, back in the 90s, by Takara. What cactus toys didn’t they make?

Black Friday! Robots!

The newest and bestest Lipson Robotics robots are finally out at the store. And just in time, I might add.

They cost a bit more than 10¢, OK? But I guarantee you this robot will fix your cough. And any bursitis you may have.

Succulent Calendar

I see that Debra Lee Baldwin has a new Succulent Calendar for 2011, through Zazzle.

I just thought you might need to know. It is “Black Friday” after all.

Did I mention that we carry her 2 books at the nursery? They are the most popular books we carry. I just thought this was an important addition to your personal store of knowledge. Now you know.

I wonder if there are any other good succulent calendars out there? Probably not.

Black Friday Robots

Another one of our brand new spectacular Lipson Robotics robots that will be out and available Friday morning.

I wonder what all these robots have to do with Thanksgiving and Black Friday? Oh, and what do they have to do with Cactus?

Nobody knows. Go figure!

Thanksgiving Centerpieces? Think Cactus!

Here are 2 of my favorite cactus centerpieces that I’ve found while googling on the intertubez for the last 20 seconds.

It’s a cactus… AND an Ice Sculpture!

What Thanksgiving dinner wouldn’t be improved by this stunning display of frozen water? Chip off a piece of the ice for ole’ Uncle Hamish who’s going to want a few more scotches, if you know what I mean!

Or, if spending money on water that’s just going to melt in a few hours seems like a waste, here’s a cactus centerpiece that will last for years.

This piece of colored paper is a 3-d cactus family heirloom in the making. Every year you and your cousin Ashley will fight over whether this is an appropriate centerpiece for the Thanksgiving table, what with all the work that Ashley put into the turkey and stuffing, that cheap piece of crap sullies her good table. But you know better – this is the perfect complement for any family gathering where nobody can stand each other – a symbol of everything that’s wrong with the American family on this most wondrous of family holidays!

More Robotics

More Lipson Robotics at the nursery by Friday. This is the last batch we’ll be getting.

Holiday Ad Season

We’re gearing up for Black Friday with newspaper ads for the local “Holiday Gift Guides”. Here’s the one in color for the SF Chronicle.

And this one is running in black and white in the East Bay Express.

We’re featuring terrariums, I think.

Bright Orange Cactus

Singapore Plants Lover has some delicate photos of a very bright orange irradiated Gymnocalycium graft. They seem to be very popular, and I understand they’re even more popular in Asia.

Here’s more info about them.

I find them to be unpleasant. Here’s a wikipedia photo to get you started, but go ahead and click through to the Singapore photos, too.

That looks like it’s been grafted onto a Hylocereus base. I wonder if the base can still produce delicious dragon fruit when grafted like that?

Saguaro Christmas Tree

Miriam’s Ideas found the bestest thing ever at Goodwill. It’s a Ceramic Saguaro that she thinks must be a christmas tree since it has hooks on it. Take a look.

I wonder if it’s still available?
