The Tree Cholla’s Not So Secret Life: A Guide to Happy Houseplants

opuntia_subulata

The Tree cholla (Cylindropuntia fulgida), also known as the teddy bear cactus or chain-fruit cholla, might look intimidating at first glance.

This spiky cactus, covered in barbed branches, has a reputation for being a bit…well, jumpy. But don’t let those looks fool you!

Sun-Loving Spines

Just like most cacti, tree cholla thrives in bright, direct sunlight. Make sure it soaks up 6 to 8 hours of sunlight every day for the best growth possible.

A south-facing window is perfect for your prickly friend to soak up those rays.

If your home doesn’t get much natural light, consider supplementing with a grow light to keep your cactus healthy. If the stems become thin and stretched, you’ll notice it needs more sunlight.

Watering

When watering, tree cholla prefers to live on the dry side. Water your cactus deeply only when the soil is dry to the touch.

Overwatering is a common killer of cacti, and the tree cholla is no exception.

Planting Without Getting Poked

When planting or transplanting your Tree Cholla, handle it carefully, as those spines can be a bit prickly!

Wear gloves and carefully wrap a newspaper or thick cloth around the base of the cactus. Consider using tongs.

Gently place the cactus in a pot with drainage holes and fill it with the cactus mix.

Avoid packing the soil too tightly.

Propagating for More Spiky Fun

Tree cholla can be propagated from stem pads.

Carefully remove a healthy pad using sharp, sterilized pruners during the spring or summer.

Let the pad form a callous before planting it in a well-draining soil mix.

Once planted, keep the soil reasonably moist until new roots develop.
