Gymnocalycium bodenbenderianum

G. riojense

Small barrel cactus, to 6″ across, often flattened. Spines recurve tight to the stem. Stunning sepia-pink flowers.

Gymnocalycium friedrichii

G. stenopleurum
G. mihanovichii friedrichii

Small flowering barrel to 4″d. Grows in dry savannah. Variable cream to pink flowers. Stem can show a lot of color variation depending on sun conditions and various cultivars.

Gymnocalycium horstii

Small flowering barrel, light pink flowers. Stems rotund 8-10″ in diameter. Green ball shape. Will form small clusters. Keep dry in winter.

Gymnocalycium neohuberi

G. curvispinum

Solitary stems to 3″, flattened globose. Lots of curved spines. Scented pink flowers, blooming size in a just a few years. Keep dry in winter.

Gymnocalycium platense

Flattened globose small barrel cactus with thick central spines. Cream-colored to light-yellow flowers with red throat.

Gymnocalycium saglionis

One of the larger Gymno’s, will get 12″ across. Generally solitary. Pinkish-white flowers with reddish throats.

 

 

Hoodia gordonii

Stems to 12″ tall, clumps of many spiny branches. Tan to Burgundy carrion flowers. Stems are eaten as an appetite suppressant by the San people of the Namib. Very low water.

Mammillaria albicoma

Soft and fuzzy appearing, low clustering small barrels with cream-colored flowers.

Mammillaria backebergiana

Usually solitary. Cylindrical to 12″h. Short pyramidal tubercles, not woolly. Crown of small bright pink flowers.

Mammillaria bombycina

3-4″ round stems form large clusters. Circular clusters of deep pink flowers are borne on the upper surface in spring and summer. Hooked spines, downy white hairs.
