Why is Regular Potting Mix a No-Go for Cacti?
Standard potting mix tends to retain too much moisture, which can lead to root rot for cacti. Their roots crave good drainage and aeration to prevent them from sitting in soggy soil.
Understanding Drainage: The Key to Happy Cacti The most important factor in cactus potting soil is drainage. Cacti don’t like soggy feet!
In the wild, cacti get infrequent bursts of water, and their roots aren’t built to handle constantly wet conditions. Cactus soil needs to allow excess water to drain away quickly to prevent rot.
Here’s what it means for your potting situation.
- Pot with drainage holes. Make sure your cactus pot has drainage holes at the bottom. This allows excess water to escape and keeps the roots from sitting in water.
