The Green Thumb’s Guide to Cactus Soil: Growing Happy, Healthy Cacti

Three Cactus in 3" Chive Minute Pots—one yellow, one blue, and one green—are displayed on a white background. Each ceramic planter is filled with brown pebbles.

Cacti may come from harsh desert environments, but that doesn’t mean they thrive in just any soil. These prickly pals have specific needs regarding their living environment, and cactus soil is key to their success.

Why is Regular Potting Mix a No-Go for Cacti?

Standard potting mix tends to retain too much moisture, which can lead to root rot for cacti. Their roots crave good drainage and aeration to prevent them from sitting in soggy soil.

Understanding Drainage: The Key to Happy Cacti The most important factor in cactus potting soil is drainage. Cacti don’t like soggy feet!

In the wild, cacti get infrequent bursts of water, and their roots aren’t built to handle constantly wet conditions. Cactus soil needs to allow excess water to drain away quickly to prevent rot.

Here’s what it means for your potting situation.

  • Pot with drainage holes. Make sure your cactus pot has drainage holes at the bottom. This allows excess water to escape and keeps the roots from sitting in water.
  • The right type of soil. Opt for a cactus soil mix like our own custom cactus soil
  • A touch of organic matter. While drainage is essential, a bit of organic matter like compost or coco coir helps retain some moisture and provides nutrients for slow growth.

Pre-mixed Cactus Soil to the Rescue!

Don’t worry if whipping up your own mix isn’t your thing. Many garden centers and nurseries carry pre-mixed cactus potting soil.

Here at Cactus Jungle, we’ve formulated our own custom cactus soil blend specifically for your prickly friends’ needs.

Why try our cactus soil mix? Well, it contains:

  • Volcanic Powerhouse. We use a base of lava and pumice for exceptional drainage and aeration.
  • Long-lasting Organics. Skip the peat moss! Our organic ingredients (coir and composted rice hulls) are naturally rot-resistant thanks to being the seed husks of water-transported seeds. This means they are packed with natural antifungal properties for long-term soil health – lasting eight to ten years, compared to just two or three years for peat moss.
  • Moisture Mastery. The coir and rice hulls are long fibers that hold just the right amount of moisture without getting soggy. They also act like tiny sponges, absorbing and slowly releasing the nutrients from our slow-release complex fertilizer, keeping your cacti happy for an extended period.
