New Plants at Cactus Jungle

February New Plants!

We have new plants for you today, and all month long. All our plants are available at our San Anselmo store in Marin County, north of the city, and an easy drive across the Richmond Bridge from Berkeley, our old stomping grounds.

People ask us if we will still deliver to the East Bay and San Francisco, and we tell them Yes! Of course we still do. For you, anything.

But first you have to come and check it all out – have you been to the store in Marin yet? – you get our emails, you laugh at my jokes, you bought plants at the Berkeley store for years, so give us a chance to serve you in the heart of Marin: San Anselmo.

Still not convinced? How about if I told you that we’re right near the Star Wars Park!

Imagination Park, San Anselmo is a 3 minute walk from Cactus Jungle. And it is very real, so very real.

Enjoy!

Did I mention this is also the location of the first appearance of Boba Fett, even before The Empire Strikes Back? See here!

PLANTS IS THE CATEGORY

Euphorbia fasciculata are weird enough to lead off with this month. They will grow bigger, and more club-like.

Trachyandra tortilis are getting all wavy. They will go dormant in summer, but they will also get thicker and wavier every subsequent year, with lots of sun.

Alocasias have lots of fun foliage, this one has “Dragon Scale” leaves, though I don’t know that anyone really knows what dragon scales look like since they were only recently invented by GRR Martin for his recent book “Tale of the Dragon” or something.

Gorgeous Pinguicula hybrids! Flat and broad, the leaves are sticky and trap small insects only for the enzymes to then start their work breaking down the chitinous shells and so on, the cycle of life, etc.

Mangave “Lavender Lady” handles winters really well around here. Some of the Mangaves are a bit fussier, but not this lavender-scented succulent. Was that a joke? Or not? Who can tell, but I make myself laugh thinking about customers leaning down to smell the Mangaves just to check, so that’s fine.

WINTER SUCCULENT FLOWERS IS THE CATEGORY

Aloe “Safari Orange” flowers. While the flowers are not orange unlike so many other aloes, Safari Orange has bright orange leaves in full sun.

Aloe “Safari Sunrise” flowers. That’s pretty nice.

Aloe dawei flowers are not yet open. The hummingbirds are waiting.

Mangave “Silver Fox” flowers are starting to attract the attention of the bees.

String of Hearts are looking good, some even in bloom. Ceropegia woodii.

MORE PLANTS IS THE CATEGORY

Massonia setulosa is generally sold as Massonia depressa, but they are different plants! The flowers are different, that is. The flat leaves are just as flat and broad and froggy looking. They are both called Hedgehog Lily. They are both pollinated by gerbils in South Africa. It’s a fun plant!

Othonna lobata hybrids are small caudiciforms with strappy leaves, like so many of the plants we sell. It’s practically our motto: Small Caudiciforms with Strappy Leaves. It does have a ring to it, I wonder how it will look on the signage.

Tylecodon schaeferianus has bulbous leaves. I like words like Bulbous. Very fine words, very intense. But appropriate! I wouldn’t use a word just for the fun of it.

Opuntia santa-rita is our long time favorite prickly since it turns more purple and looks best in winter. These do get big, large round pads.

Gymnocalycium saglionis is being featured this month because this one individual looks good. No other reason.

On the other hand, we are featuring these Trichodiadema densums this month because they are ready this month. What a deal! They will have pretty flowers in spring, so if you don’t buy them now that is OK, they will be selling fast and we will run out in early spring.

I SEE WE HAVE MORE PLANTS IN THIS CATEGORY

Pelargonium appendiculatum has feathery leaves. I like words like Feathery but not because they are very fine words, but because they are intensely descriptive of reality. It’s like the word is a distortion of reality but it’s not, it IS reality. Intense.

Pelargonium ferulaceum are hardy outside and do have fragrant leaves, a little bit, I think. Many pelargoniums do have fragrant leaves. Is this one of them? I only take the pictures, I don’t smell the plants.

Agave “Eye Scream” are pleasantly colored variegated rosettes with pointy sharp terminal spines.

Sempervivum “Gold Nugget” is one of those brightly colored alpine hens and chicks succulents I’ve heard so much about. It will prefer afternoon shade in the summer, but is very cold-hardy in the winter, not that this is a cold winter.

It’s Echeveria season! Not really, that would be spring and it’s not yet spring, so I take it all back. I am a fool. But this Echeveria “Lola” is fine. Sick.

Echeveria elegans is very similar in form but pure white, snowball white, from Mexico. Also known as the Mexican Snowball. Someone should check on those names, this comes from a snow-free desert.

Echeveria “Devotion” is a fuzzy-leaved plant with fuzzy fuzzy I am stunned by the fuzzy oh

Aeonium “Garnet” is one of our regular burgundy succulents.

Aeonium “Tong Yan” is anything but regular. This is an uncommon variegated succulent with two-toned rosettes.

Aeonium “Lily Pad” has thick rounded leaves. These are very froggy plants. Froggy style is the best. If you look froggy up in the thesaurus you will find nothing, it isn’t there. 🙁

Aeonium “Sunburst” are very full and we have them big and little. Big colors.

Peperomia “Frost” is an easy growing houseplant with good color and fresh inflorescences. Low growing, spreads wide, will easily fill out a pot.

Peperomia “Marble” is completely different, but also has the same fresh inflorescences! This one is upright. And mottled. Yet another fun word! Mottled. What even am I doing. Someone should take the thesaurus away from me. No! I’m keeping my thesaurus.

Superbowl Predictions: O/U, I take the under. MVP will be the winning QB. Defenses will be strong, bend but not break.

….

And also Patriots win.
