Cactus Flowers in the Desert

A close-up of an Echinopsis, known as Big Rosy, displays a pale pink cactus flower with many layered petals and yellow stamens at the center, blooming among green cactus stems and dry brown grasses.

In the arid, forsaken stretches of the earth, where the sun’s rays scorch the barren land and the parched air offers no reprieve, there exists a marvel of nature—cactus flowers. Amidst the formidable spines and the grotesque forms of these desert sentinels, the blossoms emerge as radiant epistles of life, defying the desolation that surrounds them.

Behold, as the first light of dawn kisses the saguaro and the prickly pear, a transformation of the most profound sort begins. These sentinels, guardians of secrets whispered by the winds across eons, unveil their delicate treasures. In hues of crimson, gold, and alabaster, they bloom with a fervor that belies their harsh environs. Each petal, a whisper of defiance, speaks to the resilience of life itself, thriving against all odds. Read More…

Smell Me

A star-shaped Stapelia gigantea flower with yellow petals and red edges blooms from a cactus-like plant in a yellow and white pot, sitting outdoors on a wooden surface.

I hear the crew put up a “Smell Me” sign to go with this very stinky giant Stapelia gigantea carrion flower that is just horrid and will make your eyes tear. No good!

I think you can see that the flies have already found this monstrous apparition and are getting ready to lay eggs. Fun!

Late-Blooming Perennials

Potted plants and late-blooming perennials are displayed outdoors at a garden center, with a wooden pergola structure in the background and sunlight highlighting the greenery.

I want you all to know that just because I write these blog posts in a first-person chatty style doesn’t mean that I’m a chatty AI bot, I’m a real person! I have real feelings and likes and dislikes too. And I like these Safari series Aloes. This one is Aloe “Safari Orange”.

Artichoke as Metaphor

A green cactus with prominent spines and ridges, resembling an artichoke, sits in a small red plastic pot against a solid black background. Its dried, brown, shriveled top serves as a metaphor for resilience in harsh conditions.

Obregonia denegrii looks enough like an artichoke that some people call it the Artichoke Cactus, not to be confused with Agave parryi truncata which is known as the Artichoke Agave. Maybe instead of comparing unrelated plants to artichokes, we should call the delicious and valuable artichoke the Pulque Vegetable.

Rusty Sedums

A small green Sedum plant with layered, rounded leaves grows in a plastic pot against a solid black background, highlighting the unique appeal of this popular succulent groundcover.

Sedum “Firecracker” turns rusty red colors in the fall, any day now!
