Wednesday, May 30. 2007Spiral AloeThe San Francisco Chronicle named the Spiral Aloe the plant of the week last week:
![]() Genus/species: Aloe polyphylla Family: Liliaceae Description: The aloes comprise a striking array of succulents for Bay Area gardens, varying widely in form and size with many displaying impressive floral features. One of the most unusual and unique for our climate is the South African spiral aloe, Aloe polyphylla. Once rare in cultivation and now threatened with extinction in the wild, it has recently become more available in the nursery trade. The name is derived from the exotic spiraling of the leaves that form a tightly clustered and intriguing rosette.... This beautiful and rare species evolved in the high mountain elevations of South Africa, where it experiences relatively cool summers and winter snow, but it seems especially happy in our coastal climate. Since it remains green year-round, it provides continuing pleasure in both its form and its bloom. For years people have asked if we have them available for sale, and we've been growing the babies and decided this spring they were big enough, sturdy and stout enough, and just basically all around ready.
