Wednesday, May 16. 2007Cactus FruitSomeone was looking for tunas (cactus fruit) in the Bay Area, and posted on chowhound.com.
They were given some suggestions. Although a competitor in the prickly pear business I want to tell you that there are 400, or so, acres of prickly pear cactus in the vecinity of Monterey, Ca., of the red prickly pears that your looking for. It's a business run by the D'Arrigo family that sells under de "Andy Boy" label, and their season ends around the lasts of march each year. Regarding the light skinned prickly pears, I love them because they are firm, sweet and juicy, although not very well understood to the American pallate, that is more into the red cactus pear grown, both wild and commercially in the U.S., Sicily and the Meditteranean.... Berk Bowl has prickly pear (as of today). $1.39 per pound. They were pink. They also had another fruit that looked very much alike -- the name began with "ho..." but I forgot to write it down. Price was similar, the color was a bit redder. Both were in the "fancy fruit" section. Also, I have seen them at Monterey Market in Berkeley. But nobody told them to grow their own! They're so easy to grow right here in the Bay Area. They have beautiful flowers, and large round luscious fruit. Trackbacks
