The Regional Plant Resource Centre at Bhubaneswar has the finest and richest collection of over 1150 species – hybrids and cultivars of cacti and other succulents in the country and, indeed, Asia.A dedicated team of researchers at the Centre have developed about 500 different types of cacti so far. There are six polythouses covering an area of 20,000 sq ft here housing the beautiful cactus plants.... Some of the cacti are named after famous scientists and noted personalities like Mother Teresa, Biju Patnaik and like that. The cactus flowers from March to May. Another wonder is that the plants actually bear fruit and edible ones at that! The fruit is multi-functional. Not only is it nutritious, it can also be used as a body soap and face moisturiser. The Centre was established at Bhubanewar as an autonomous organisation under the aegis of the Department of Science, Technology and Environment, Government of Orissa. The Centre was registered as a society on March 3, 1985. Fascinating. Trackbacks
