Monday, May 7. 2007Louisiana CactusActually, it's a story about an agave about to bloom.
After 14 years of watching his cactus slowly grow into a behemoth, Jeff Riley is a proud man nowadays."It's going to be my first," said Riley as he sips on a beer and waves to passers-by, pointing to the century plant that dominates his front yard. "I planted it when it was 6 inches tall." Specifically, it will be Riley's first time his prized century plant blooms. But the 45-year-old former construction worker isn't entirely at ease. "People say once it blooms ... it kills the plant," he said. "It's really got me concerned, though, because everyone knows my house by that plant."... Henry Harrison, with the Louisiana State University Agricultural Center in Washington Parish, confirmed Riley's fear. "Once it blooms that plant is going to die," Harrison said. Oh well. We wish Jeff good luck with his next century plant. Trackbacks
