Wednesday, May 2. 2007Good NewsThis news may be a month old, but it's worth printing even now. The Feds have actually decided to protect a rare cactus species. From the Arizona Daily Star:
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (has) decid(ed) to keep the Pima pineapple cactus on the endangered list, ensuring its protection despite rampant housing development. According to a U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service report, the cactus is at most at 25 percent of its necessary survival population. Without the protection of the government, this rare plant might have faced extinction. The next step is for a recovery plan to be made for this unique piece of the Southern Arizona landscape.
