Wednesday, April 11. 2007Philadelphia CactusThe news out of Pennsylvania has become critical. The UK Telegraph has the story:
The Philadelphia Flower Show is more than 175 years old... For many Americans, "Philadelphia" is synonymous with the flower show in just the same way that for many Britons, "Chelsea" means only one thing.... Sylvia Lin, another show veteran, has also won many awards. Her specialities are succulents and begonias. This year she is entering a gnarly specimen of Euphorbia esculenta in the "20 Years And Over" class, while her brand-new baby, a crested prickly pear that she adopted for its "interesting" form, will be in the "Pot Under Six Inches" class. From the most delicate hepatica to the hoariest euphorbia, the adrenaline of competition keeps standards impossibly high - but all in a spirit of horticultural camaraderie, of course. "We wouldn't do it if we didn't love it," says Bowditch. Lin agrees: "It's so satisfying seeing a plant reach a stage where it's worthy of the show - like a mother and child." What can you do to help? What will you do to help? I suggest a well-written letter to the editor of your local paper will be a good start. Trackbacks
