Sunday, January 14. 2007Winter in Arizona Landscaping here altogether different One of the most common mistakes newcomers make is not familiarizing themselves with what can be planted here, said Paul Ellis, a master gardener with the University of Arizona's College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. "They try to grow a garden that represents where they came from,'' he said. "You need to deal with plants that are either native or are adapted to the Sonoran Desert...." If a frost is predicted, Ellis said, frost blankets that sell for about $13 are a good idea. "You can leave them on for days at a time because they allow the sun to come through.''. Blankets and sheets also work, he said, but they need to be removed every morning. "And never use plastic, because it conducts cold.'' Column cacti are vulnerable to frost, Ellis said. He recommends putting styrofoam cups over the cactus tips. And unlike other plants that benefit from being watered and well hydrated before a freeze, cactus and succulents should be left dry. Lots of good information there. Trackbacks
