If your cactus is really huge, get the biggest foam insulation you can find and cut it in half lengthwise. Using duct tape, piece together as many sections as you need to reach around the big stems.... Before unpotting a large plant, cover the floor with an old shower curtain. Have the new pot ready at hand, along with the fresh potting soil.... gently loosen the winding roots. Place it in its new home, then gently but firmly pack in the fresh soil around the roots. You might need a friend to hold a really big plant upright while you firm in the new soil.... I also explained to my cactus-growing reader that this is not the best time to repot houseplants. Even in a controlled environment like a heated home, plants prefer not to have roots disturbed in winter. There are some other suggestions in that article that I just don't agree with. Plus, old packing blankets also work well, and rolled up newspaper can be a big help. And then don't water for 2 weeks. Trackbacks
