Monday, November 19. 2007Turkish CactusThey grow them big in Turkey. From Today's Zaman:
Agricultural engineer Zeki Kırkım has established Turkey’s biggest cactus farm in Bodrum, a beautiful and popular district in Muğla province....“In 1960, my grandfather, Halil Kırkım, went to Germany and worked on a cactus farm. After he returned to Turkey, he continued to grow cactus as a hobby in Denizli. However, when there were too many cactuses to be kept in the house, he established a 500 meter greenhouse and started to sell grown cactuses in İstanbul, Ankara and İzmir. He shared his experiences with me.” It's a heartwarming intergenerational, intercontinental story that I think would make a good movie. I see Sean Connery as the dying grandfather and Tom Hanks as the star cactus grower. When they then follow up with a TV show, they can base a recurring character on our employee Matthew D., a young, idealistic propagator just out of college who only wants to help feed the world, but spends his time repotting euphorbias. It would make for some good drama. Trackbacks
